Here is the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, set out plainly - the figures the manufacturer publishes, and what each one costs or saves you in the rest of the build. The short version: 8 / 16, AM5, 105W. It runs at a base 4.5 GHz and boosts to 5.4 GHz; the boost figure is the one to compare against another part, because it is what a game or any single-threaded job sees. The 32MB of L3 cache is the quiet figure on the sheet - it is what keeps the cores fed, and it separates two parts with the same core count more often than the clock speed does. Built on 5nm, which is mostly a statement about how much heat it makes for the work it does.

What those numbers mean
Eight cores is where streaming while you play, or cutting a 1080p timeline, stops being a compromise. For a machine that has to do two demanding things at once, this is the step that actually changes the experience rather than the benchmark. The second figure is threads, not cores: the operating system sees 16 workers, which helps a busy machine stay responsive but is not the same as doubling the work it can do.
At 105W the stock cooler is doing real work. It will not fail, but it will be audible under load and it will let the part throttle back on a hot afternoon. A single tower air cooler is the sensible line item here, and it is not an expensive one.
The AM5 socket is AMD's current platform. It takes DDR5 only, and AMD has said it will keep supporting the socket, which means a faster processor in two years can be a processor rather than a processor and a board and a memory kit. That commitment is the main reason to pay the AM5 premium over AM4 today.
It takes DDR5, and only DDR5. The sticks are physically keyed so a DDR4 kit will not go in, and there is no adapter - this is the single most common thing people get wrong when they upgrade a processor and keep their old memory. Buy a kit rated at DDR5-5200 or faster; a slower kit works and simply runs slower, and a faster one runs at its rated speed only once you switch on the EXPO or XMP profile in the board settings, which almost nobody remembers to do.
It has integrated graphics: Radeon Graphics (2 cores). That means it drives monitors on its own, and for office work, accounts, video and older or lighter games it is genuinely enough. It also gets you a working machine on day one if you plan to add a graphics card later, when the price is right.
It is a PCIe 5.0 part, and that is compatible in both directions: it will work in an older slot, and an older card will work in a newer one. What changes is the ceiling on bandwidth, which matters for storage and for cards at the very top of the range, and almost never enough to make a slot generation the reason to change a board.
What it needs from the rest of the build
