People have been asking about the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D at the shop. Rather than repeat a launch write-up, here is what its specification actually commits you to. The short version: 16 / 32, AM5, 170W.

What those numbers mean
16 cores is more than a game will ever use, and exactly what a render, a compile or a multi-camera timeline will. If the machine earns its keep by finishing jobs, this is the part of the specification that decides how long you wait. The second figure is threads, not cores: the operating system sees 32 workers, which helps a busy machine stay responsive but is not the same as doubling the work it can do.
At 170W this needs planning, not a cooler bought at the end. A 280 or 360 mm liquid cooler, a cabinet that can physically mount it, and intake that is not fighting a solid front panel. Under-cooled, a part like this quietly runs slower than the one below it and the benchmark you bought it for never appears.
The AM5 socket is AMD's current platform. It takes DDR5 only, and AMD has said it will keep supporting the socket, which means a faster processor in two years can be a processor rather than a processor and a board and a memory kit. That commitment is the main reason to pay the AM5 premium over AM4 today.
It takes DDR5, and only DDR5. The sticks are physically keyed so a DDR4 kit will not go in, and there is no adapter - this is the single most common thing people get wrong when they upgrade a processor and keep their old memory. Buy a kit rated at DDR5-5600 (dual-channel) or faster; a slower kit works and simply runs slower, and a faster one runs at its rated speed only once you switch on the EXPO or XMP profile in the board settings, which almost nobody remembers to do.
What it needs from the rest of the build
- A motherboard with the AM5 socket. The socket is a hard requirement, not a preference. AM5 motherboards we stock
- A DDR5 memory kit, in two sticks. One stick halves the bandwidth the processor can reach, for no saving worth having. DDR5 memory
