Ryzen 5 8500G: build the PC now, buy the graphics card later
An AM5 processor with a Radeon 740M that is genuinely playable at low settings. What the 8500G is really for, the PCIe 4.0 asterisk nobody mentions, and when to spend the extra on an 8600G.

Most people who buy an APU are not trying to avoid buying a graphics card. They are trying to delay buying one — get the machine working now, add the card when the money or the stock allows. The 8500G is built for exactly that, and it is honest about it in a way the marketing usually is not.

What the 740M will and will not do
Set expectations correctly and this chip is a pleasure. Set them wrong and you will be disappointed on day one.
It will run esports titles at 1080p on low to medium settings at frame rates people actually play at — Valorant, CS2, Dota, League, older competitive shooters. It will handle emulation, indie games and anything from a few years ago. It drives multiple monitors, decodes video in hardware and makes a genuinely good office or study machine.
It will not play current AAA titles at 1080p at settings you would enjoy. No integrated graphics does. If someone tells you otherwise, ask them at what resolution and what settings.
The asterisk: PCIe 4.0, not 5.0
The 8000G APUs run PCIe 4.0, while the rest of the AM5 range runs PCIe 5.0. The graphics slot also runs at a reduced lane count compared with the non-APU chips.
For a mid-range card this costs you very little in practice. It is worth knowing before you buy rather than after, and it is worth remembering when the plan is "8500G now, serious graphics card later" — the card will work, and it will work slightly below what the same card does on a 7600X.
Memory matters more here than anywhere else
Integrated graphics has no memory of its own. It uses system RAM, and it uses it at whatever speed you fitted.
This is the single biggest mistake we see on APU builds: a good APU crippled by one slow stick of memory. Buy two sticks, not one — dual channel roughly doubles the bandwidth available to the graphics — and buy DDR5-6000 if the budget reaches. On an APU, faster memory is a graphics upgrade.
8500G or 8600G?
The 8600G costs more and gives you the stronger Radeon 760M. If the integrated graphics is the *point* of the build — a machine that will never get a discrete card — the 8600G is worth the difference.
If the integrated graphics is a bridge until you buy a card, the 8500G is the right chip. Do not pay for graphics you plan to stop using.
What to pair with it
- Motherboard: a B650 board. You are on AM5, so a future processor upgrade stays open.
- Memory: 2 × 16 GB DDR5-6000. Two sticks, not one. This is the important line.
- Cooler: the bundled cooler is adequate at 65 W.
- Power supply: modest now, but size it for the graphics card you intend to add, not the one you have.
