AM4 or AM5? 7 processors compared for a build in 2026

The published figures for 7 processors side by side, and a plain answer about which one suits which kind of machine.

Safety level: informational · Level: beginner

People rarely walk in asking for one processor. They ask which of several, and the answer is usually not the fastest one - it is the one whose figures suit the machine they are actually building. Here are 7 of them side by side, with only the columns that differ, because a column they all agree on answers nothing.

The candidates, on the figures that differ

What actually separates them

The platform, which is the real decision

These are not all the same socket - AM4 and AM5 appear in the table above - and that is the choice that outlives the processor. A socket decides which motherboards fit, which memory generation you buy, and whether a faster chip in two years means swapping one part or three.

AM4 is the older platform and that is exactly its argument: boards are inexpensive and everywhere, it takes DDR4 which costs little now, and it is the cheapest way to a genuinely competent machine. It has also reached the end of its line, so the processor you buy is the last one that board takes. AM5 costs more to enter - the board and DDR5 both - and buys you an upgrade path AMD has committed to. If you replace a machine every five or six years, AM4 is the better spend. If you upgrade a part at a time, AM5 is.

How many cores you are actually paying for

Core count is the figure that separates these most honestly. Six is the comfortable floor for a machine that plays games and browses at the same time. Eight is where streaming while you play, or cutting a timeline, stops being a compromise. Past twelve you are buying for work that finishes jobs - renders, compiles, virtual machines - and a game will leave most of it idle. Buying more cores than the machine will use is the most common way to spend money here without getting anything back.

What each one costs you in cooling

The TDP column is a shopping list, not a statistic. At 65W a bundled cooler copes and a quiet tower cooler is a small, worthwhile extra. At around 105W the stock cooler holds but gets loud and throttles on a hot Mumbai afternoon, so a tower cooler is a line item rather than an upgrade. Past 150W you are planning the cabinet as well: a 280 or 360 mm liquid cooler, and intake that is not fighting a solid front panel. Under-cooled, the fastest part here will quietly run slower than the one below it.

Whether you get a picture without a graphics card

AMD Ryzen 5 5600F and AMD Ryzen 5 5600X will not put anything on screen without a graphics card - not a desktop, not even the BIOS. The rest drive a monitor on their own. That card is a required line in the budget, not an upgrade you add later, so compare the two on the price of a working machine rather than on the price of the processor.

Which one, for which machine

What the rest of the build has to be

Whichever you choose, the socket decides the motherboard, the memory generation is not interchangeable, and the thermal figure decides the cooler. Our PC builder checks all of that against the parts you already own and refuses a combination that will not physically go together: build it here. Also: motherboards, memory and CPU coolers.
