What those numbers mean
Eight cores is where streaming while you play, or cutting a 1080p timeline, stops being a compromise. For a machine that has to do two demanding things at once, this is the step that actually changes the experience rather than the benchmark. The second figure is threads, not cores: the operating system sees 16 workers, which helps a busy machine stay responsive but is not the same as doubling the work it can do.
At 120W cooling stops being optional. A large dual-tower air cooler or a 240 mm liquid cooler is the entry point, and the cabinet needs somewhere for that heat to leave - a closed front panel will undo a good cooler entirely.
The AM5 socket is AMD's current platform. It takes DDR5 only, and AMD has said it will keep supporting the socket, which means a faster processor in two years can be a processor rather than a processor and a board and a memory kit. That commitment is the main reason to pay the AM5 premium over AM4 today.
It takes DDR5, and only DDR5. The sticks are physically keyed so a DDR4 kit will not go in, and there is no adapter - this is the single most common thing people get wrong when they upgrade a processor and keep their old memory. Buy a kit rated at DDR5-5600 (dual-channel) or faster; a slower kit works and simply runs slower, and a faster one runs at its rated speed only once you switch on the EXPO or XMP profile in the board settings, which almost nobody remembers to do.
What it needs from the rest of the build
- A motherboard with the AM5 socket. The socket is a hard requirement, not a preference. AM5 motherboards we stock
