DDR4 or DDR5: which do you need, and does it matter?
They are not interchangeable, and the choice is usually made by your motherboard.

For an upgrade, this is not really a choice — your board decides. For a new build it is, and the honest answer is that it matters less than the price gap suggests.

Desktop memory. Laptop memory follows the same generations with different physical modules.
They are not interchangeable
DDR4 and DDR5 have differently positioned notches and different electrical designs. A DDR5 stick will not fit a DDR4 slot, and no adapter exists. A board supports one or the other — never both, whatever a listing implies.
So for an existing machine, the choice is already made. Check the board, buy that generation. Buying the wrong one is the most common wasted purchase in memory.
For a new build
DDR5 is the current standard. New platforms are built around it, capacities are higher, and it is what a machine bought now will keep being able to buy in five years.
DDR4 is mature and cheap. On a DDR4 platform it remains perfectly capable for gaming, office work and most content creation.
The real-world difference in ordinary use is smaller than the specification gap suggests. Where DDR5 shows a clear advantage is memory-bandwidth-sensitive work — some simulation, large-dataset work, integrated graphics — and in headroom for the future.
How much you have matters far more than which generation it is. 32GB of DDR4 beats 16GB of DDR5 for almost everything a person actually does. Spend on capacity before generation.
How much do you need?
- 8GB — genuinely tight now, even for browsing with many tabs.
- 16GB — the sensible baseline for gaming and general use.
- 32GB — comfortable for content creation, virtual machines, heavy multitasking, and gaming with things running behind it.
- 64GB and above — specific workloads that you would already know about.
Speed and timings
Buy a matched kit at a speed your board supports, and enable the XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) profile in the BIOS afterwards. Without that step the memory runs at a slower default, and a good proportion of machines never have it enabled.
Do not pay for a speed above what the board runs. It will simply run slower, and the money is wasted.
Expected result
The right generation for your board, enough capacity for your work, in a matched kit, running at its rated speed.
