Choose a graphics card by what you actually run
Your monitor and your software decide this, not the model number.

Start from your monitor and your software. The card follows from those, and buying the other way round is how people overspend.

Start with the monitor
The card only ever has to drive the screen you own.
- 1080p — the most common resolution, and the least demanding. A mid-range card handles it comfortably, and a high-end one is largely wasted unless you are chasing very high frame rates.
- 1440p — the sweet spot for most gaming builds today. This is where spending on the card starts genuinely paying back.
- 4K — demanding. This is where high-end cards earn their price.
Refresh rate matters as much as resolution. Driving 1080p at 240Hz is a harder job than 1440p at 60Hz. If you do not know your monitor's refresh rate, check it — many people run a 144Hz panel at 60Hz without realising, and fixing that setting is free.
Then the workload
Gaming. Resolution and refresh decide it. At 1080p the processor matters more than people expect; at 4K the card dominates.
Video editing. Encoder support and VRAM matter more than raw gaming performance. Some codecs are accelerated on some cards and not others — check for the codec you actually use.
3D and CAD. Some professional packages certify specific drivers. Check whether yours does before assuming a gaming card is equivalent.
Local AI. VRAM is the constraint that decides what you can run at all. A model that does not fit in memory does not run slowly — it does not run. Work out the memory your intended models need first; everything else is throughput.
The physical checks people skip
- Length against your cabinet. Measure. High-end cards are long.
- Thickness in slots. Many are three slots wide now and will cover the slot below.
- Power connectors your supply actually has, natively.
- Display outputs — the right ports, in the right number, at the refresh rate you bought the monitor for.
Do not pair badly
A very fast card behind a much older processor spends its time waiting, especially at 1080p. Equally, a fast processor with a weak card will not help in games. The most common improvement we suggest is moving money from the processor to the card — but which way round depends on what you run.
Expected result
A card matched to the screen you own and the software you use, that physically fits and that your supply can feed.
