A drive is not showing up

Work out whether it is a connection problem, a configuration one, or a failing drive.

A drive that has vanished is either not connected, not initialised, or failing. These need very different responses, so identify which before doing anything.

Applies to

Internal drives in a desktop or laptop, new or previously working.

Before you start

If this drive holds data you need, stop and read this paragraph. Every additional power cycle on a failing drive reduces the chance of recovery. If the data matters more than the drive does, do not keep retrying — power it off and bring it in. Repeated attempts are the most common reason recoverable data becomes unrecoverable.

Step 1: is it in the BIOS?

Restart and enter the BIOS (usually Del or F2 during startup). Look at the storage list.

Present in the BIOS — the hardware is fine and this is a configuration problem. Go to step 2.

Absent from the BIOS — this is hardware. Go to step 3.

Step 2: present in BIOS, absent in Windows

  1. Right-click Start → Disk Management.
  2. A new drive shows as Unallocated. That is expected: initialise it as GPT, then create a Simple Volume. Nothing is wrong.
  3. A previously working drive showing as Unallocated is different and serious — the partition table has gone. Do not initialise it. Initialising is what makes the data genuinely hard to recover. Stop here.
  4. A drive with a healthy partition but no letter just needs one assigned: right-click → Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. RAW instead of NTFS means a damaged filesystem. If the data matters, stop.

Step 3: absent from the BIOS

  1. Power off and unplug. Hold the power button five seconds.
  2. Reseat both cables on a SATA drive — data and power. Try a different SATA cable and a different power lead from the supply; both fail.
  3. Reseat an M.2 drive and check the retaining screw is present.
  4. Try a different port. SATA ports fail individually. Note that populating a second M.2 slot disables specific SATA ports on many boards — check the manual before assuming the port is dead.
  5. For a new drive, recheck the protocol. An NVMe drive in a SATA-only M.2 slot fits perfectly and never appears. This is the most common cause with a new purchase.

Expected result

Either the drive returns, or you know it is a hardware fault rather than a setting.

An intermittent drive is a drive in the process of failing. The window for recovery is open now and closing.

Stop and ask a technician if

We can attempt recovery, and the earlier we see it the better the odds. What we can achieve depends entirely on how the drive has failed — nobody can promise recovery, and anyone who does is guessing.
