Fit an M.2 NVMe drive in a desktop
The fitting, the standoff screw people lose, and getting Windows to see it.

You will need
- The correct M.2 drive
- A small Phillips screwdriver
- The board manual
- A backup of anything irreplaceable
Fitting the drive takes ten minutes. The parts that catch people out are the mounting screw and getting Windows to acknowledge it afterwards.

Desktops with a confirmed-compatible free M.2 slot. Confirm key, length and protocol first.
Before you start
- Back up anything irreplaceable. You are not touching the existing drive, but any work inside a machine carries risk, and a backup costs you nothing.
- Shut down fully and unplug. Hold the power button five seconds afterwards to drain residual charge.
- Discharge yourself on bare case metal before touching anything.
- Find the standoff screw. It is tiny, it lives in the accessory bag with the board or under the heatsink, and it is the single most-lost item in this job. Locate it before you start.
Steps
- Open the case and find the M.2 slot. It is a short horizontal connector, usually with a small screw post at the far end. It may be under a heatsink plate.
- Remove the heatsink plate if there is one, keeping its screws. Peel the protective film from the thermal pad underneath — leaving the film on is a real and common mistake, and the drive then runs hot and throttles.
- Move the standoff to the position matching your drive's length if the board uses a movable post.
- Insert the drive at about 30 degrees. It slides in at an angle; it does not push in flat. Line up the notch. It should meet no resistance.
- Press the far end down flat and hold it. It is spring-loaded and will lift if you let go.
- Fit the screw into the standoff while holding it flat. Snug, not tight — this is a small screw into a small thread and it strips easily.
- Refit the heatsink if there was one.
- Close up, reconnect, power on.
Making Windows see it
A new drive is invisible in Explorer until it is initialised. This is expected, not a fault.
- Check the BIOS first. If the drive is not listed there, stop — it is a slot or protocol problem and no amount of work in Windows will help.
- In Windows, right-click Start → Disk Management.
- The new drive appears as Unallocated. If prompted to initialise, choose GPT.
- Right-click the unallocated space → New Simple Volume → accept the defaults → give it a letter and a name.
Expected result
The drive appears in Explorer with its full capacity, less the usual formatting difference. A 1TB drive showing about 931GB is normal and is not missing capacity.
If it does not work
Not in the BIOS. Protocol or slot mismatch, or not fully seated. Recheck the specification for that slot.
In the BIOS, not in Windows. It needs initialising — see above.
The machine will not boot at all now. Power off, unplug, remove the drive, and confirm it boots without it. If it does, the drive or the slot is the problem.
Capacity looks wrong. Check you have not created a small partition. Disk Management shows the true layout.
Stop and ask a technician if
- The screw thread has stripped or the standoff has come loose
- The drive does not slide in at an angle without force
- The machine was working and now will not post after several careful attempts
- You intend to move Windows onto this drive rather than use it as extra storage — cloning has its own risks and its own guide
Moving Windows onto it
That is a different job: cloning, recovery keys, and making sure the machine boots from the right drive afterwards. If the machine holds anything you cannot lose, it is worth having us do it.
