Check M.2 key, length and protocol before buying a drive
Three properties decide whether an M.2 drive works in your machine. Check all three.

Three things decide whether an M.2 drive works in your slot. Get all three right and it is straightforward; get one wrong and you have a drive that does not appear.

The three properties
1. Key — the notch position. M-key is what modern NVMe drives use. B+M-key is typically SATA. The notch is physical, so a mismatched key will not fit — this one at least fails visibly.
2. Length. Given as a four-digit code: 2280 means 22mm wide, 80mm long. 2280 is by far the most common. Laptops sometimes take only 2242 or 2230, and a 2280 drive in a machine with a 2242 mounting point has nowhere to screw down. The Steam Deck and many compact laptops use 2230.
3. Protocol. SATA or NVMe, as covered in the previous guide. This is the one that fails invisibly: the drive fits, screws down, and never appears.
Steps
- Identify the board or the laptop model exactly.
msinfo32gives the motherboard; a laptop needs its model from the underside label.
- Find the M.2 section of the specification. For each slot, the maker states the supported protocol, the lengths, and often the PCIe generation.
- Note the per-slot differences. Boards commonly have one fast slot wired directly to the processor and a second, slower one through the chipset. They are not interchangeable if you care about speed.
- Check for shared bandwidth. Many boards disable specific SATA ports when the second M.2 slot is populated. This is stated in the manual, usually as a footnote, and it matters if you also run several SATA drives.
- Check whether a heatsink is included or in the way. Some boards ship with M.2 heatsinks; some drives have their own. Two heatsinks do not stack, and a drive with a tall heatsink can foul a graphics card in the top slot.
Expected result
For each slot: the key, the supported lengths, the protocol, the PCIe generation, and whether using it costs you a SATA port.
If it does not work
- The specification is ambiguous — the manual's block diagram usually resolves it. Or send us the board model.
- The drive fits but does not appear — check the BIOS first: if it is absent there, it is a protocol or slot problem, not a Windows problem. A drive visible in the BIOS but not in Explorer simply needs initialising in Disk Management.
