Verify a serial number, an invoice and India warranty
Checks you can do on your phone, at the counter, before paying.
Safety level: informational · Time: about 12 minutes · Level: beginner
Every check here can be done on a phone in the shop, before money changes hands. Afterwards they are much less useful.
Applies to
Any hardware purchase carrying a serial number: laptops, graphics cards, drives, boards, complete systems.
Steps
- Find the serial on the product itself, not only on the box. A label on the underside of a laptop, on the graphics card's backplate, on the drive. Box and unit should match — if they do not, ask why before anything else.
- Check it with the manufacturer. Most publish a warranty or support lookup that takes a serial. Enter it and read what comes back:
- Warranty active, with a date and a region — what you want.
- Not found — could be a very new unit not yet in the system, or could be a problem. Ask.
- Registered to another region — genuine hardware, no local warranty. That is grey market.
- Warranty already started months ago — the clock began at first sale. On a "new" item, that needs explaining.
- Get the serial onto the invoice. This is the step that matters most later. An invoice tying that serial to that line is what a service centre asks for first.
- Check the invoice itself. Your name or business name, the seller's GSTIN, the date, the item described specifically enough to identify it, the tax shown separately, and the serial where the product has one.
- Keep it. A photograph is better than nothing; the PDF is better than the photograph. Warranty claims two years out fail on missing invoices more than on anything else.
Expected result
A serial you have personally checked, on an invoice that names it, stored somewhere you will find it.
If something does not add up
- Seller will not give a GST invoice — a lower "cash price" without one is not a discount. You lose the warranty route, the proof of purchase and any recourse. Walk away or pay the invoiced price.
- Serial removed or defaced — do not buy it. There is no innocent explanation.
- Box seal already broken and not mentioned — ask why. Open box is fine when disclosed and priced for; it is not fine as a surprise.
Warranty is not one thing
Three different arrangements get called "warranty":
- Manufacturer — you deal with the brand's service centre. Longest and strongest.
- Distributor — you go through the importer. Common on some components.
- Seller — you come back to the shop. Normal on refurbished goods, and only as good as the shop.
Ask which one applies. All three are legitimate; they are simply different processes with different lifespans.
